This weekend, Tropixxx – a collective of DJs and party founded by Mathias and The Clown Prince – will celebrate its sixth year of being at the forefront of tropical bass in the District. On Sunday, the crew, which has since included The Lothario and most recently Jackson Kachor, will be back at Velvet Lounge with special guest Trillnatured.
I asked The Clown Prince, aka Marvin Lopez, to reach out to the guest DJs of the past Tropixxx to reflect on the parties. I asked them what they felt was the most memorable part of the night, the song that got the crowd most hype, and to describe Tropixxx as a food. Having a dive packed out and going nuts to a Mars Volta tune because I still haven’t had something as great as that happen in any gig in my career

“Inertiatic Esp” by Mars Volta. But I also was playing a lot of early Louis Futon, Joker, grime instrumentals and even some drum & bass.

Probably the Al Pastor taco from El Rey because thats where you eat when you’re hammered at Tropixxx.

How puuumped the crowd was for such a tiny venue, and how my brother tried to crowd surf and almost hit the ceiling.

The best tacos in all of mexico.

Intimate dancefloor and welcoming atmosphere.

Minorities playing all kinds of dope music. No regular radio stuff. The camaraderie and love the residents showed me and had for each other.

Jambalaya. Skittles. Quiche. Pizza. Anything that combines great ingredients and becomes something better.

I could lie and say that i wasn’t lit out of my mind and that I have an intimate, working knowledge of what I played that night. But what I do remember is being throwed ah (as heck) and it was fun and people actually fucked with kuduro and bubbling and dembow and changa tuki, etc. which I was especially playing a lot of at the time. Lots of crowds across the US didn’t take to it well which annoyed me cuz that’s all I wanted to play.

A life-sized bust of Marvin made entirely of a fused lump of tropical Starbust sculpted into the shape of his head.

TBH, the free tequila shots makes my memory of the full set a bit hazy, but I do recall the crowd going ape shit when we went opened with our “Orcaz Fightin” and the Busta Rhymes vocal hook dropped in with the kicks.

The day after halloween wasn’t the best in terms of numbers but the few that were there were super-hyped! Shot & go with the bartenders and fucking bass music.
