At a nondescript warehouse in Northeast D.C., club music from around erupted from the Grand Ancestor sound system. DJ Lag, the “King of Gqom,” seized the sonic behemoth as his throne with a bone shattering set of gqom, a relatively new variation of house music originating in Durban, South Africa that has been steadily gaining popularity all over the world. The night also featured an all-star collection of the best selectors in D.C.’s dance music scene: Benbo, L’enfant, Panch (who also represent the city’s cohort of Classical Trax members), Jessicunt and the tandem of DJ Underdog and DJ NativeSun.
