Watch Garnish Episode 10: Chuck Brown Day 2016

The 2nd Annual Chuck Brown Day paid tribute to the late Chuck Brown, a world-renown musician often called the “Godfather of Go-Go.” Brown innovated go-go, a style of funk music native to D.C. and unique for its call-and-response elements. For close to half a century, Brown was the de facto ambassador of go-go, playing shows around the world to fans eager to hear hit songs like “Bustin’ Loose'” as well as re-imaginations of popular songs.

The Chuck Brown Foundation established Chuck Brown Day to pay tribute to the legendary singer and unite his fans from the city. During the show, I spoke to fans, colleagues, bandmates, and family members on his importance to D.C. and the promulgation of go-go.

Watch Garnish Ep. 9: DAIS ‘Protest Pop’ for Radical Dance Floors

DAIS is a D.C.-based electro-pop band who uses their platform to maintain self-spaces and encourage freedom of expression. Vocalist Adriana-Lucia Cotes and keyboardist/composer Johnny Fantastic comprise the duo which have brought their unique and exploratory lie show to D.C. and Baltimore in venues and art spaces such as DC9, Union Arts and The Holy Underground. The band tackles tough themes over bright melodies and kick-ass drums: identity, romance, politics and and living as historically targeted minorities (Adriana identifies as an Afro-Latina queer woman, and Johnny as a transgender person).

I caught up with Adriana and Johnny at Marx Cafe for a show sponsored by D.C. label Blight Records. DAIS discusses how they bring their unique talents together, safe spaces, and why it’s important to make music that comes from their own experiences. You can stream and download their song “Individual” here.

Watch Garnish Episode 8: OkayAfrica DC

For close to 4 years, DJs Underdog and NativeSUN have been throwing their acclaimed Okayafrica dance parties. In a city that has few outlets for South African Kwaito, Congolese Soukous, Angolan Kuduro – and just about every style and derivative of African music – Underdog and NativeSUN have made OkayAfrica one of the most popular parties, frequently packing out Tropicalia until two, three or four A.M. In the most recent iteration, drummer Malik Stewart, as well as percussionists Dada and Malerie, joined the DJs, and played live on stage to the music blasting through the speakers.

Watch below and learn why OkayAfrica has been so successful, what this series of parties means to D.C., and why live percussion is so important.

Watch Garnish Episode 7: Parallel Diamonds

Parallel Diamonds is a collective of creatives from just about every medium that boasts close to 30 members. Founded by Yang.N.Yin. – a trio which combines trap, punk rock and spoken word – Parallel Diamonds includes photographers, models, clothing designers, singers, songwriters, DJs, producers, and event curators. Most of the members are spread out in Maryland, and keep in touch with meetings to coordinate projects, moves and events, as well as through group chats to share new material and support each other.

Most recently, the collective put on the Red Room at Union Arts, which featured performances by Soddie Casino, mūdī, Yang.N.Yin., and DJ sets by Knoimnot and Franklin of Last Niight (a separate collective which joined PD last year), as well as BVST and Mikado the Demi God. Each member that I interviewed stressed the importance of PD, for the support system and brotherhood that they often don’t get anywhere else. Whether through mosh pits or nature walks, Parallel Diamonds find inspiration and use any number of media to connect with each other and the rest of the world.

Watch Garnish Episode 6: Classical Trax Brings URL to IRL with Guestlist

Classical Trax is an online community of DJs, producers, writers and curators with a focus on electronic bass music. Founded by Matt Lutz, the invite-only group has grown to over 800 people from all over the world. Every day, artists exchange dubs and original songs, early album previews, mixes, articles and critique. (Early last summer, Matt invited me to the group after we connected via Soundcloud.)

In March of this year, Matt teamed up with The Borrowers, a DJ duo comprised of Marvin Lopez (The Clown Prince) and Paige Plissner (The Lothario), as well as Panch (co-founder of LENG) to start Guestlist, a monthly party to feature guest DJs from all over the East Coast, at 9:30 Club’s Backbar. The most recent Guestlist featured headliner BassBear from New York, who often teams up with El Blanco Nino as Osoblanco. The next Guestlist is titled “Locals Only” and will feature College Hill, Kouhai, Duolo and Benbo.
